Washoe Seasons of Life: A Native American
Story is a child’s-eye view of how the Washoe tribe lived
in the Lake Tahoe region (Nevada and California). This is a
historical fiction read-aloud about a Washoe girl, her friends and
family as they work and play. Journey with Mele as she helps gather
pine nuts for the winter months, joins the rabbit drive, listens to
her grandfather’s stories, plays with her friends and performs the
daily chores common to the Carson Valley Washoe tribe.
An entertaining read for children ages 7 to11, Washoe
Seasons of Life was specifically created for literacy
programs aimed at the older elementary school reader. It is the only
literacy-focused read-aloud to incorporate the Washoe language.
Washoe Seasons of Life
celebrates the tribe’s unique language with sidebars containing
key Washoe words related to the story. A glossary and pronunciation
key, written with the assistance of Washoe language expert and
University of Nevada, Reno professor emeritus William H. Jacobsen,
Jr., are provided at the back of the book to assist inquisitive
young readers, parents and teachers.
